Curriculum Vitae R.H. Maatman (1960)

René Maatman has been a member of the AFM Management Board since 1 May 2008. His portfolio includes, inter alia, supervision of securities issues and public offers and supervision of the securities markets and the financial infrastructure.
Maatman studied law at the University of Nijmegen from 1979 to 1984. He was a member of the academic private law staff from 1985 to 1988 at the Open University Heerlen. He subsequently entered the service of ABP (the Dutch pension fund for public employees) where he managed the legal and tax department of ABP Investments until 1 May 2008.
He was a member of the Dutch Corporate Governance Code Monitoring Committee (the "Frijns Committee") from August 2006 to May 2008.
He obtained his doctorate from the Radboud University Nijmegen with the doctorate thesis "Het pensioenfonds als vermogensbeheerder". This thesis is translated in English: “Dutch Pension Funds, fiduciary duties and investing” (Kluwer 2004)). He has, additionally, dozens of academic publications to his name in areas of asset management, corporate governance and pension fund governance.
Maatman has been Professor of Asset Management at the Faculty of Law of the Radboud University Nijmegen since 2005. This is a research chair focusing on the private-law principles of asset management and regulatory aspects of asset management.
Maatman is married and has two daughters and a son.
